Michael Phelps and Yao Ming are joining us at the PBC Forum!

We are excited to announce Michael Phelps and Yao Ming are coming to Hong Kong next month to speak at the Philanthropy for Better Cities Forum!

The most decorated swimmer in history with a record 23 gold medals, Phelps established the Michael Phelps Foundation in 2008 to promote water safety, healthy living, and the pursuit of dreams.

The Foundation launched the im program, a learn to swim, healthy living and goal-setting curriculum based on the principles and tools Phelps utilized in his swimming career, through the Boys and Girls Clubs of America in 2010 and with Special Olympics International in 2011. Today, more than 22,000 people have benefited from the programme.

Since retiring from his remarkable basketball career in 2011, Yao has set up The Yao Foundation, committed to boosting education, improving youth health and promoting charitable activities in China. In 2012, it launched the “Yao Foundation Hope School Basketball Season”, providing young people in under-developed regions with the opportunity to learn to play basketball, and helping them build self-confidence and team spirit through participating in the sport. As of 2016, the programme has reached 322,500 young people across the country.

Phelps and Yao will join the audience in exploring the contribution sports participation can make to society, which goes beyond direct impact to important ripple effects. During the discussion, Phelps and Yao will consider the initiatives and mechanisms to promote sport that philanthropists should prioritise, and how these may vary across different parts of the world.
